Events

April 2014 - HSCCJC Activities for National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month

On March 28, 2014, Governor Neil Abercrombie and Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui proclaimed April 2014 as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. The five Children's Justice Centers, in partnership with their respective Friends of the CJCs and other partner agencies, participated in various activities throughout the month of April. A big "mahalo" to Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii for providing the pinwheels which were used by the CJCs and Friends to symbolize hope, health and justice for all children.

East Hawaii -

March 28, 2014: Opening Ceremonies for Child Abuse Prevention/Awareness Month at Aupuni Center Conference Room. Nearly 100 social service agency staff, business leaders and community members attended the opening ceremony which featured a proclamation from Mayor Billy Kenoi, special message from Governor Neil Abercrombie, presentation by young adult members of the HI H.O.P.E.S. Board (former foster youth) and an activity demonstrating what various family, school and community members can do to prevent child abuse.

 
     
 

April 5, 2014: 10th Annual Celebrate Your Family Community Fair at the Hilo Hongwanji Sangha Hall. Approximately 150 children and their parents/family members attended this event. Twenty-three community agencies/organizations offered activities designed to promote positive parent/child interactions and/or healthy families. The Friends of the CJC of East Hawaii announced the winners of their poster contest. Entries were created by children (Kindergarten through Grade 6) from Kamaaina Kids throughout East Hawaii.

 
 

April 9, 2014: Representatives from the CJC of East Hawaii's partner agencies helped to create a Pinwheel Garden representing Hope, Healing and Justice for Children outside of the Center. This project was done in conjunction with Department of Health and Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii.

Kauai -

CJC of Kauai held an open house to commemorate April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Friends of the CJC Board members and partner agency representatives were also in attendance. Read more about the CJC of Kauai's open house here.

Maui -

Prevent Child Abuse Month Proclamation Video for Maui County

April 7, 2014: Mayor Alan Arakawa proclaimed April 2014 as Month of the Young Child in Maui County. Social service agencies and non-profit organizations, including CJC of Maui and Friends of the CJC of Maui, were in attendance to recognize Prevent Child Abuse Month.

CJC of Oahu staff and members of partner agencies gathered with pinwheels and the Governor's proclamation outside of the Center.

 

Friends of the CJC of Oahu and volunteers from a local school's sports team created a paper lei that represented the many professionals who respond to child abuse in the community. The paper lei was hung around the CJC of Oahu's waiting room.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard Visits CJC of Oahu

CJC of East Hawaii's Annual Open House
On December 6, 2013, CJC of East Hawaii held its annual open house. Pictured below are Representative Clift Tsuji, House District 2, U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, Council Member Dennis (Fresh) Onishi, Hawaii County District 3, and Terri Lum, CJC of East Hawaii Program Director.

Pitching for a Great Cause

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, Luke "The Nuke" Burns, raised $300 for the CJC of East Hawaii in a pitching contest sponsored by the Hawaii County Bar Association. The contest was part of the HCBA's Baseball Night with the Hawai'i Stars playing the San Rafael Pacifics.
